For over seven years, I have been coming up with new ideas every week for The Write Prompts. Here, I do the same, only these are all starter or "continue on" writing prompts. They are a great way to get the juices flowing when you do not know where to start.

If you could become an animal, what animal would you choose and why? Write about a world where everything of that color has disappeared. Write about a character who is good at things you are not good at. Write about a character who is good at the same things you are, but does them differently.

For example, they paint in a completely different style or play a different position in the same sport.

Write about someone who is suddenly able to see for the first time. Write a piece where the descriptions focus on the sense of smell. Write a piece involving a made-up language. Write about a world or country where they use an everyday object like a book or a clothespin as money. Write about a character who has a secret hobby.

Good fiction writing prompts

Why do they have to keep it secret? Think of a random adjective and noun. That is now the name of a vehicle be it car, boat, or spaceship. How did it get that name? What sort of person owns it?

Take a random object nearby and make up a sport that utilizes it. What are the rules? What qualities does someone need to have to be good at it speed, strength, etc. Pick an item of clothing that you own or that someone nearby is wearing.

Write about a character that would wear it constantly. Write about a character without making it clear whether the character is male or female. Write about a world where the weather is always opposite the weather you are currently experiencing.

Write about a character that breaks any electronic they touch. Write about a thief that only steals one obscure item, like snow globes or used up pens. Write two characters from very different climates talking about the weather in a third place.

What would constitute an exciting day in the life of a pen? Write about an artist who is colorblind. Write about a character from a modern setting suddenly finding themselves in a fantasy or futuristic setting.

Write about a world in which one major historical event turned out differently. Free write on the theme of sunlight. Write about a character that has a different skin color from you.

What would the resulting creature look and act like? Listen to a piece of instrumental music and write about what it makes you think or feel.

The clock seemed to slow as I thought of her. I knew what she would say. It was the kind of night I knew I would remember for the rest of my life. As he stepped off the train, a wave of panic seized him. I love coming up with fiction writing prompts or exercises, and I think this list is particularly good for character development.

You learn a lot about someone from how they behave in their most embarrassing moments, and this is a great way to create a sympathetic character.
